SUPPLY OF MEDICINES BY GSI ITALIA TO CUBAN PUBLIC HOSPITALS

Approximately three cubic metres of medicines, worth 230,000 euros, have been made available by GSI Italia to Cuban hospitals and are due to be flown to the island on 7 August. The country is facing a serious humanitarian crisis following the tightening of the US embargo – which, it should be noted, has been in place since 1959 – and which Trump has enforced since the start of this year by imposing a total ban on the flow of Venezuelan oil to Cuba. Electricity is available for just a few hours a day, generated by old Russian-made thermoelectric power stations. The energy crisis is affecting every economic and social sector on the island, from healthcare – once the pride of the Cuban government – to transport and tourism, which has seen the sector brought to a standstill with the exodus of all international tour operators and the closure of hotels and holiday resorts. The United States, through exorbitant tariffs, has declared war on those countries that maintain trade agreements and maritime links with Cuba.
