THE TURNING POINT STARTED BY GSI ITALIA TO THE CARE OF UTERINE CANCER IN ETHIOPIA

The uterine cancer still kills in the West but it is almost a certainty in Ethiopia, as in most African countries. Those who are struck by the uterine cancer generally discovers it when it is too late to save themselves.

GSI Italia has decided to make a change to this drama that affects tens of thousands of Ethiopian women every year by introducing for the first time the Pap smear, a measure that in the countries with an advanced economy has brought this form of cancer to a deadly incidence close to zero.

Between January and March a first group of three doctors has been guest of the Umbrian Health Authority in Perugia and a second group will follow in the coming months. Objective: to recognize positive cases at a glance, directing them to medical and surgical treatment. Young doctors sent from Gondar University to Perugia to learn the cancer cytology and transfer the training received in Italy to other dozens of Ethiopian doctors in their country.

In a few years the new method will be fully implemented throughout the country, this is the agreement signed by the president of GSI Italia with the Ethiopian Minister of Health.

A vaginal smear, a slide, a microscope and the surgery performed by Ethiopian doctors trained in Italy and by the Italian ones that GSI Italia will send alongside Ethiopian doctors to their diagnostic and operating autonomy, will represent the future of Ethiopian gynecological medicine.

Above all they will represent safety for tens of thousands of women.

Thanks to the many who are committed to this goal: Francesco Panella, former gynecologist head physician in Foligno, responsible for the program, Dr. Maria Rosaria D’Amico, Dr. Morena Malaspina and Dr. Eugenio Di Dato who are taking care of the training of Ethiopian doctors in Perugia with dedication and passion, the business management, Prof. Pasquale Parise and Dr. Basilio Passamonti, who have adopted the program as if it was their project.

What is called “a team”, with the pleasure of “solidarity”.

Formidable.
