UPDATE MOHAMMED’S CONDITION IS STABLE

Information received last night, 4 July, from Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, where Mohammed, the young boy who survived the Israeli killing of his mother whilst she was breastfeeding him, has had a foot amputated and suffered a laceration to his arm.
This morning, Donatella Fava of ‘Piacenza per Gaza’ – who previously worked as a healthcare worker in the Gaza Strip and is now collaborating with GSI Italia on the Health Campaign – telephoned her friend Hammam, asking him to travel to Khan Yunis and meet the medical colleagues who operated on the infant and are keeping him under observation. We thus learnt that the baby had been operated on by surgeons from Médecins Sans Frontières, who are working at Nasser Hospital. The team monitoring him reports that his clinical condition is stable but considers it too early to decide on his possible transfer to Italy. Today, 5 July, we are awaiting a phone call from our colleagues at the hospital, with whom GSI Italia is already collaborating on distance learning for nurses and physiotherapists, as well as specialist consultations. We have asked Hammam to meet Mohammed’s father tomorrow to assess his willingness, should it be necessary, for the baby to be transported to Italy by GSI Italia.
