3rd REPORT FROM GAZA

TOP MARKS FOR THE PALESTINIAN UNIVERSITY
In Gaza, the university does not close. It adapts. With 90 per cent of its former facilities completely destroyed, resilient lecturers have continued teaching amidst bombs and mindless drone strikes, and now, as our correspondent in Gaza, Sami Abu Omar, tells us, it is exam time, and he takes us inside the large tents that have replaced the lecture theatres. Young people, seemingly idle, await their turn to be examined via web platforms and WhatsApp. It is July, the weather is hot, but in Gaza, education is a reason for living that transcends the death that reaps its toll daily on the streets and within families. These are the young Palestinians. Around half of them – 45 per cent – have attended or are currently attending university; half of them are women. Fifty-one per cent of Palestinians aged between 25 and 64 are university graduates. Of those who are not, 38 per cent hold a higher education qualification. Yet they are the children of a lesser god. Israel is convinced that the greater god is on their side.
