I wrote a few weeks ago about how, behind the killings of children \u2013 in the Gaza Strip as well as in the West Bank \u2013 there is, quite clearly, a deliberate decision by the Israeli military, backed by the government and the judiciary itself, to kill Palestinian children. This strategy is understandable if Israel\u2019s aim is genocide; killing children is to cut off the very roots and survival of a people. I am returning to this topic in this post because the report by the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry explicitly accuses Israel of having identified children as a preferred, if not the absolute, target of the extermination of the Palestinian people. There are many methods: long-range target practice. To hit the mark: the head or the heart. An inhuman game recounted by some Israeli soldiers themselves, incapable of recognising their own inhumanity. Over 260 children have been killed since the start of the truce. A seven-month-old baby was shot dead for no apparent reason in the West Bank (PeaceLink Editorial Team, 23 June). Beating pregnant women until they miscarry is a speciality of the settlers, classifiable as manslaughter. Taken together, however, these killings remain, all things considered, limited in number \u2013 a few hundred, as I wrote above.<\/p>\n
As for the real carnage, the political authorities \u2013 and consequently the military authorities \u2013 have, like expert accountants of death, managed to choose how to kill without causing a stir: the destruction of hospitals, the killing of healthcare workers, the withholding of medicines and medical supplies, a total blockade on humanitarian evacuations to Europe and neighbouring countries such as Jordan and Egypt, but above all \u2013 as reported in the latest news \u2013 the closure of links between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, which represented the only possible and hoped-for route to salvation for seriously injured Palestinian children. According to the WHO, at least 18,500 Palestinians in Gaza require urgent medical treatment outside the Strip, including 4,000 children. Many suffer from cancer, serious heart conditions, rare diseases, or have sustained extremely severe injuries during the war that require specialist procedures impossible to carry out in hospitals that are now on the brink of collapse. It is also estimated that at least 1,500 patients have already died whilst awaiting authorisation for transfer.
\nGSI Italia is directly monitoring the case of Mohammed, a newborn baby caught up in the killing of his mother whilst she was breastfeeding him, who suffered a laceration to one arm and the amputation of one foot. Further requests have been made for Al Fadil Alngar, aged 2, who has suffered a head injury, and Salem, who is on a ventilator. The Community of Sant\u2019Egidio is in the same situation as us, awaiting the transfer of these young patients to Italy as well.<\/p>\n
Every source we have contacted in recent days \u2013 from the Italian Consulate in Jerusalem to the WHO, which is the body responsible for managing clinical referrals for young patients and arranging their transfers in consultation with the host countries \u2013 tells us that there are no longer any lists of children eligible for evacuation, following a decision by Israel, with the endorsement of the Israeli judiciary, which has been called upon by NGOs such as GSI Italia. The number of young patients waiting in vain for medical transfer is thus set to be counted among the dead in the near future. Israel knows how to rack up the high figures of a genocide when it is playing games or firing shots, but when it gets serious, it blocks everything. It always finds a \u2018legal\u2019 reason not to issue a visa or to block the route between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. It knows how to keep death firmly in its grip.<\/p>\n
