The army has handled the work in Gaza \u2013 the first stage of Greater Israel, Yahweh\u2019s personal gift to his chosen people \u2013 with seriousness and restraint. In the West Bank, however, the settlers have taken charge: good folk who believe that \u2018it\u2019s all mine; God promised it to me\u2019. In Lebanon, on the other hand, the tasks were divided: the soldiers rained down white phosphorus, whilst the settlers carried out proletarian expropriations. But the settlers have learnt that if you get away with it once, you might get away with it a second time too. And so these enthusiasts of ancient history and of the motto \u2018what\u2019s yours is mine and\u2026 keep quiet or you\u2019ll get a beating\u2019 have remembered that, according to the biblical narrative, part of Syria was also the land of the Jewish people. And so, with the help of the army \u2013 which, in accordance with international law, on the one hand warns: \u2018Behave yourselves, this isn\u2019t right, you\u2019re going too far\u2026\u2019 and on the other reassures: \u2018Go on, I won\u2019t look\u2019 \u2013 And so, believe it or not, for the past couple of months we\u2019ve had yet more new settlements (read: occupations) in Syria, already under the rule of the bloodthirsty Assad. Jordan, Iraq and Egypt had better watch out. The time has come, dear readers, for us to start studying the Bible; I wouldn\u2019t want us, unprepared as we are, to find ourselves included in the Promised Land without even realising it.<\/p>\n
